Recent figures show that the online gambling industry went up by 12.5 percent. Online betting raked in $29.95 billion worth of revenues and most of it came from bets for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. However, the online gambling industry still grew by 11.4 percent without factoring revenues from the World Cup bets.

The two sectors that posted the best growth are online bingo websites and online casinos. Online bingo made a total of $2.67 billion last year which translates to a 28.4 percent growth from 2009 revenues. Meanwhile, online casinos took in $6.24 billion to gain 13.3 percent more than its 2009 income. Sports betting got revenues worth $12.06 billion to raise their income by 10.8 percent.

Meanwhile, online poker has been steadily growing every year and it took in $5.06 billion in 2010, translating to a 7.1 percent increase. However, the online poker growth is expected to decline due to the bonuses at large poker rooms. In 2010, there were about 2,400 online gambling websites and this is 160 lower than the registered online gambling websites in 2009.

The decline can be attributed to the crackdown of some countries in online gambling, particularly with online casinos. Just recently, Cyprus is pleading the European Union to allow them to ban online casino operators in their country. However, the verdict on it is still months away.
